The best part is, there's no signs of cultural appropriation here. In fact, Formation is Black as fuck. Beyoncé uses the term "negro" throughout the song and it's clear from the jump that she's not concerned with commercial appeal. She fully embraces her Black southern roots and the New Orleans backdrop plays an essential part in the eccentricity and Blackness of the video. Ad libs from Big Freedia make this funky Mike WiLL Made-It track even more contagious.
The most powerful scene? A little Black boy putting his hands up in front of a line of police officers in riot gear. When Beyoncé calls for the "ladies" to "get in formation", it's so clear that she's addressing Black women. "We slay!" YASSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Formation is exclusively streaming on Tidal… for now.
