Today my lunch break started off like any other. I Googled Beyoncé, as I often do (don’t judge) to learn about the recent happenings of the Queen Bey, when I came across a startling headline involving her sister Solange and husband Jay-Z.
I was in a hazy state of disbelief as I watched the TMZ video of Solange attacking Beyoncé’s husband in an elevator, the evening of the Met Gala. Decked out in their finest, the three stars take part in an awkward tango of kicks and lunges, as Beyoncé’s bodyguard pries Solange away from Jay-Z.
Watching this video was like watching the demise of my own family. While the whole scene was distressing, nothing was more cringe-worthy than Beyoncé’s reaction to the situation. For much of the silent three and a half-minute video, Beyoncé merely observes as her enraged younger sister attempts to attack Jay-Z. She stands unfazed between the two, as they bicker. There is even a moment where Beyoncé turns to Jay-Z and seems to add her own words yet still, she makes no attempt to calm her sister. At the end of the video, I asked myself “What did I just watch?”
Of the two, Solange has always been cited as the more outspoken Knowles sister. While I love her free-spirited nature, let’s be real about the situation. Solange’s openness in comparison to her older sister’s calculated moves, are largely due to Beyoncé’s massive commercial success. Of the two, who can afford to act a fool at a red carpet event? Beyoncé may have kept her composure only because she knew what awaited her just beyond those elevator doors: paparazzi and the prying public. It’s possible that Solange was doing her dirty work for her. The question on most people’s minds is: What did he do?
If we had no idea who these people were, I would have easily guessed that Solange and Jay-Z were the couple and Beyoncé was just an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire. When they got into the elevator, Solange immediately got in Jay-Z’s face. I’m not suggesting that the relationship between Solange and Jay-Z is at all romantic but after watching the tape many times, it’s obvious from her body language that there is passion there… for her sister.
There are few bonds that run deeper and more complex than that of sisters. Jezebel’s commentary on the situation further reflects on the intensity of sisterhood and a woman’s need to defend her sister. When a woman can’t come to her own defense, it’s more than likely that her sisters will rise to meet the challenge. My own sister has evoked some of my deepest emotions; ranging from hate and rage to love and admiration. If I witnessed a man, hurt her in some way, I’d have some choice words (and a possible kick) for him too.
We may never know what took place in that elevator or why. Maybe it’s not even that deep. It’s possible that Solange had too much to drink that night and Jay just did something to piss her off. Regardless of what triggered the fight, footage shows Bey leaving that night with Solange. Since the Gala, Beyoncé and Jay-Z were spotted court side at games so this may have just been a regretful night. For all we know, Solange and Jay have already made up. Still, this incident gave the world a glimpse into the not-so perfect life of Mrs. Carter. While many may revel in this rare glance of misery and drama, I too well know that life gets messy, even for the royalty among us.
